Saturday, March 02, 2013

There was a curious writer from Wyo, to everyone he met he asked "why-o?"

This call for entries comes from Andi Hummel of Wyoming Writers, Inc.:
Do you have a masterpiece tucked away in a drawer? Is a brand new story or poem playing around in that grey matter between your ears?
Enter your work in the 2013 Wyoming Writers, Inc., writing contest. But hurry — the postmark deadline for entries is March 15.
In addition to children’s, adult short stories, nonfiction, traditional poetry, and free verse, this contest features our new “Short and Sweet,” a “combo” category set to challenge your writing skills. Tell us a story in flash fiction (500 words or fewer—genre is your choice, but keep it clean!), or entice our judges with limericks (rhymed quintets—again, keep them clean!), the length and style fits well into our way-too-busy life!
Entry fees vary, depending upon categories chosen and whether or not the author is a member of Wyoming Writers, Inc., but everyone is welcome to join the fun. Again, submissions must be postmarked no later than March 15 and mailed with appropriate entry fees (make checks to Wyoming Writers, Inc., note “contest entry fee”) to: A. M. Hummel, 89 Strawberry Hill Road, Hulett, WY  82720
For more information on the 2013 Wyoming Writers, Inc. writing contest, check the website at http://www.wyowriters.org  for a more concise set of rules and guidelines or contact Andi Hummel at hummela@dishmail.net.

Call for entries (kids only!): International Peace Poster Contest

"Children Know Peace," 2011-2012 grand prize winner
I know Lions Clubs best for its sight programs. Club members collect old eyeglasses and provide glasses for people who need them but can't afford them. The club also sponsors an eye bank and vision screening. But the Lions apparently have other visions for us all:
Each year, Lions clubs around the world proudly sponsor the Lions International Peace Poster Contest in local schools and youth groups. This art contest for kids encourages young people worldwide to express their visions of peace. For 25 years, more than four million children from nearly 100 countries have participated in the contest.

The theme of the 2012-13 Peace Poster Contest is "Imagine Peace." Students, ages 11, 12 or 13 on November 15, are eligible to participate.
Each year's art contest for kids consists of an original theme incorporating peace. Participants use a variety of mediums, including charcoal, crayon, pencil and paint, to express the theme. The works created are unique and express the young artists' life experiences and culture.

Twenty-four international finalists are selected each year, representing the work of more than 350,000 young participants worldwide. Posters are shared globally via the Internet, the media and exhibits around the world.

To learn more about the Lions International Peace Poster Contest, please view our brochure, contest rules and deadlines, call 630-203-3812 or contact the Lions Clubs International Public Relations Department.

Call for submissions: Art Works poster contest

Sample poster from the Obama campaign
From a press release:
The Obama campaign is seeking poster submissions from artists and designers across the country to convey why we support President Obama's plan to create jobs now, and why we'll re-elect him to continue fighting for jobs for the next four years. You can make your poster about that broad theme, or focus on a specific aspect: why we've got to rebuild and modernize our roads and bridges, help veterans find work once they've returned home from service, support the small businesses that are the engine of our economy, make sure teachers can stay in their classrooms, and so on. The posters should include the words from one of the suggested slogans below or visually interpret the concepts they represent.
The campaign will choose 12 finalists once the submission period closes on November 4, 2011, and then put the finalists to a vote.
Finalists will be chosen based on the following criteria:
· Adherence to stated theme: Why you support President Obama's plan to create jobs now and his re-election campaign to continue fighting for jobs for the next four years.
· Appropriateness of tone: Conveying determination and strength
· Creativity and aesthetics
· Quality of workmanship
Three winners will get a framed print of their poster signed by President Obama and a limited edition of their poster will be sold in the campaign store with proceeds benefiting the campaign.
· Deadline: November 4, 2011 at 11:59 p.m. ET. Submissions after November 4, 2011 will not be eligible.
· Poster designs should be 16” x 20”.
· Posters may be graphic, typographic, illustrated, collaged, or include photography taken by the designer.
· Posters must include the following URL: www.barackobama.com/jobsplan
· Posters can be produced by litho, digital, or silk-screen print.
· Posters must be viable for reproduction by digital printing.
· You hereby represent and warrant that all equipment, materials, and facilities used to produce your poster are owned by you and were not provided by a corporation, labor union, foreign national, or federal contractor. Any disposable materials purchased specifically to produce the poster will be treated as in-kind contributions to Obama for America.
· Each person may submit no more than five submissions.
· All submissions will become property of Obama for America.
· When you've finished your design, please upload a PDF or JPEG of finished poster for the site on barackobama.com/artworks. (At least 380px x 480px, please.) Upload size cannot exceed 10 MB. Please also include the title of your poster, your name as you'd like it to appear, and a short paragraph about your poster.

"Manifest Hope" through your creativity

Creating a work of art is an act of hope. The artist has something to say, maybe has a vision for the future or is recalling a past event. He/she may be painting the view from the kitchen window.

Sen. Barack Obama's candidacy is also an act of hope. That's where MoveOn got the idea for the "Manifest Hope" art contest. Anyone can enter -- but the deadline's Aug. 18, so you have to get cracking.

Here are the details:

Barack Obama's historic candidacy has sparked an unprecedented artistic outpouring. Now, in partnership with Shepard Fairey and his Obey Giant collective, we're offering a new way for artists—anyone with a pen and paper qualifies—to share their talents and help elect Barack Obama at the same time.

It's called "Manifest Hope," and it's a new Obama art contest for 2D and 3D art, from painting to photography to sculpture. The winners will be shown at the Manifest Hope Gallery online and in Denver during the Democratic convention alongside works from dozens of established and influential artists.

Anyone can enter. You don't have to be Picasso, you just need to be inspired by Barack Obama and willing to donate your creativity and time to the cause.

But you need to get started soon. The final submissions deadline is August 18 at 11:59 a.m. ET. That's not much time to conceive and create a piece of art, so get started today.

All submissions will be judged by a distinguished panel of judges—artists from Obey Giant, contemporary art curators, and multi-talented musicians. Finalists will be asked to auction off their pieces, and donate the proceeds to progressive organizations.

Denver will be buzzing during the convention, but this gallery is going to be one of the coolest places to visit there. Plus, the gallery's going to have an amazing party with live performances by Death Cab For Cutie, Moby, and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah.
