Wyoming Republicans: What, We Worry?

Republicans aren't worried about losing the strangehold they hold on Wyoming politics. At least if you believe GOP Chair Diana Vaughn.

In an AP story by Matt Joyce:

Vaughan said she expects the party's core principles of "smaller government and lower taxes" to win the day in state and federal elections this November.

"We're talking about Wyoming," said Vaughan, who became the state GOP chairman last month. "This is what Wyoming stands for. That's why we've got the overwhelming majority in the state Legislature. People believe in those Republican principles and that's why we elect the people that we do."

Smaller government and lower taxes, eh? She couldn't be talking about the bloated Defense Department, which is part of government, last I heard. What about the deficit spending it takes us to continue to wage the 100-Year-War in Iraq? Lower taxes? Yes, for the richest Americans, thanks to Bush's tax cuts. Republican values: bigger federal government, spending money you don't have, and a free ride for the rich -- to hell with the middle class.

It gets even better:

Vaughan said the GOP is strong enough in Wyoming to overcome any national backlash over controversial Bush Administration policies, such as the Iraq war. Vice President Dick Cheney -- a Wyoming native -- is committed to helping the state GOP in the lead-up to the general election, she said.

Now this is great news for Democrats. If there is one man in America more reviled than Dubya, it's Dick Cheney, Wyoming's favorite son. Vaughn may think that Cheney's transgressions will be forgotten once he moves back to his hideout outside Jackson. I don't think so. Sure, the Wyoming Republican Old Guard will be happy to have Dick back in the fold. But Wyoming is not theirs and theirs alone. There are Republicans and Libertarians and Democrats who think that Cheney should answer for his crimes against humanity and the U.S. Constitution.

Later in the article, Bill Luckett, executive director of the state Democratic Party, said:

Wyoming residents are listening to presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama's commitment to overcoming partisanship in Washington. "I understand why the Republicans want to continue thinking that this is a Republican state and Republicans are just going to win because that's the way it's always been," Luckett said. "But we have outstanding candidates this year, up and down the ballot."

Republicans have long treated Wyoming as their own conservative ranch. It's time we opened up the gates to let us Dem dogies run wild!

And impeach Dick Cheney.

Kucinich web site attacked following his introduction of Articles of Impeachment

The Dennis Kucinich web site was one of the first I linked to when I began blogging in earnest in 2005. Now it's June 2008 and Kucinich is no longer running for president but still performing brave and amazing acts to defend the U.S. Constitution. I already noted how he stood up and introduced 35 Articles of Impeachment against George W. Bush. And then something mysterious happened. This comes from the Committee to Re-elect Congressman Kucinich:

Under circumstances that can best be described as "suspicious," the http://www.kucinich.us/ website was crippled early this morning a few hours after Congressman Dennis Kucinich introduced 35 extensively documented Articles of Impeachment against President George W. Bush.

Until we can restore the website and implement additional security measures, you can find the full list and detailed Articles at http://www.democrats.com/files/amomentoftruth.pdfand http://chun.afterdowningstreet.org/amomentoftruth.pdf

If you would like to show your support for the Congressman's efforts, please go to myinfo.kucinich.us to offer your comments and provide us with contact information so that we can continue to keep you informed.

Makes you wonder, doesn't it?

Kucinich pushes Bush impeachment

Dennis Kucinich, the tallest person in the U.S. House of Representatives, presented articles of peachment this evening. Here's a clip from the Chicago Tribune story:

Rep. Dennis Kucinich, a former Democratic presidential contender, said Monday he wants the House to consider a resolution to impeach President Bush. Speaker Nancy Pelosi consistently has said impeachment was “off the table.”

Kucinich, D-Ohio, read his proposed impeachment language in a floor speech. He contended Bush deceived the nation and violated his oath of office in leading the country into the Iraq war.

Kucinich introduced a resolution last year to impeach Vice President Dick Cheney. That resolution was killed, but only after Republicans initially voted in favor of taking up the measure to force a debate.

McGovern: Impeach Bush & Cheney

South Dakota's George McGovern -- writer, bomber pilot, senator and presidential candidate -- wrote an illuminating column for Sunday's Washington Post. In it, he calls publicly for the impeachment of our fearful leaders -- and gives all the reasons why it's high time we did so. In the process, he says a few nice things about his old nemesis, Richard Nixon:

I have not been heavily involved in singing the praises of the Nixon administration. But the case for impeaching Bush and Cheney is far stronger than was the case against Nixon and Vice President Spiro T. Agnew after the 1972 election. The nation would be much more secure and productive under a Nixon presidency than with Bush. Indeed, has any administration in our national history been so damaging as the Bush-Cheney era?

How could a once-admired, great nation fall into such a quagmire of killing, immorality and lawlessness?

Read the rest at the Washington Post on the Jan. 6 op-ed pages.

I cast my first vote for president in the 1972 election. I hadn't thought about lately, but it just ocurred to me that it involved a race between two Westerners: Nixon from California and McGovern from South Dakota. I know that some consider S.D. more Great Plains that High Plains. But the western one-third of the state is more mountainous than many places in eastern Wyoming. And McGovern has written extensively about the region, most notably in his book about the Ludlow Massacre in Colorado.

What other presidential election has pitched West vs. West? We certainly won't have one this time, unless John McCain or Duncan Hunter is matched up against Bill Richardson or Mike Gravel (is he still in the race?). Not likely....

Calls to impeach WYO's "favorite son"

Democrat.com carried news on Friday about a call by Rep. Robert Wexler of Florida to impeach V.P. Dick Cheney, the quiet young man who grew up in Casper, Wyoming, and went on to become the scourge of the universe. Joining Wexler in this effort are two other Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee: Luis Gutierrez of Illinois and Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin. They called on their committee to begin impeachment hearings. Here's what they said:

"The charges are too serious to ignore. There is credible evidence that the Vice President abused the power of his office, and not only brought us into an unneccesary war but violated the civil liberties and privacy of American citizens. It is the constitutional duty of Congress to hold impeachment hearings."

They wrote an op-ed outlining their position, but none of the nation's leading newspapers would publish it, according to Democrat.com. No surprise there. As A.J. Liebling said, "The free press belongs to those who own one." So it's been up to progressive bloggers to spread the word. Some of those links are on my sidebar.

Sister Francis explains it all to you

Our parents sent us to Catholic School, told us to obey the nuns. Of course, they also told us to obey the priests, to do what they tell us to do. Look how that turned out.

I wasn't subjected to the attentions of perv priests. We did have one in the ninth grade who really liked to spank us with his paddle. But he may have just been a sadist.

The nuns, on the other hand, were tough and principled, even empathetic at times. I never did know their political leanings. I attended Father Lopez High School in Daytona Beach, Florida, from 1965-69. It was the worst of times in the Vietnam War, but not a whisper of protest from any of the nuns. Only later, as an adult, did I meet nuns so dedicated to social justice that they risked arrest and prison. Some attended my church in Denver, the 10:30 Catholic Community.

But the nuns of my youth taught me well. I know the difference between right and wrong. I can see hypocrisy when it rears it ugly head. Obviously, there are other nuns continuing the "truth to power" tradition of progressive Catholicism. Witness this article in the Winston-Salem Journal :

A progressive group of U.S. nuns has called on Congress to impeach President Bush and Vice President Cheney because of their roles in the war in Iraq.

“The National Coalition of American Nuns is impelled by conscience to call you to act promptly to impeach President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney for ... high crimes and misdemeanors,” the group wrote in a letter written on behalf of its board members.

The letter says that impeachment is warranted for their “deceiving the public under the false pretense that Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction” and “destroying” the reputation of the United States and the good will of other nations.

“The time for impeachment is now — before the example of George W. Bush’s regime is set in stone,” they wrote. “Future generations will thank you for preserving the freedom of our nation and its relation to the entire human community.”

The coalition was founded in 1969 for individual nuns dedicated to issues of social justice and human rights.

The letter was approved during a mid-August meeting of the board, held in Chicago. During that same meeting, the board unanimously adopted statements opposing all war and affirming peacemaking efforts. “Rather than continuing support of a just-war theory, a more compassionate church would oppose all war and teach peacemaking skills for all levels of government and interpersonal conflict resolution,” the statement reads.

Conservative says: Impeach Cheney

Bruce Fein, Deputy Attorney General in the Reagan Administration and blogger at the Heritage Foundation, the American Enterprise Institute, and the Moonie Times, calls for the impeachment of Wyoming unfavorite son Dick Cheney in a post at Slate. Read on:

Under Dick Cheney, the office of the vice president has been transformed from a tiny acorn into an unprecedented giant oak. In grasping and exercising presidential powers, Cheney has dulled political accountability and concocted theories for evading the law and Constitution that would have embarrassed King George III. The most recent invention we know of is the vice president's insistence that an executive order governing the handling of classified information in the executive branch does not reach his office because he also serves as president of the Senate. In other words, the vice president is a unique legislative-executive creature standing above and beyond the Constitution. The House judiciary committee should commence an impeachment inquiry. As Alexander Hamilton advised in the Federalist Papers, an impeachable offense is a political crime against the nation. Cheney's multiple crimes against the Constitution clearly qualify.

To impeach, or not to impeach

Reported on AfterDowningStreet:

Congresswoman Barbara Lee, Co-Chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, has joined Lynn Woolsey, the other Co-Chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, and Congress Members Yvette Clarke, Jan Schakowsky, William Lacy Clay, Albert Wynn, and Dennis Kucinich in cosponsoring Articles of Impeachment against Vice President Dick Cheney (H. Res. 333). For details, see http://impeachcheney.org/

The list of state Democratic Parties that have passed resolutions urging impeachment of Bush and Cheney has just grown to 15. Meanwhile, 11 state legislatures have introduced such resolutions, which have now been passed by at least 77 cities and towns and a growing list of labor unions and other organizations. These resolutions are all listed at http://impeachpac.org/resolutions-list
