Mrs. P rides again in "unabashedly political" Working Words anthology from Coffee House Press

Word came yesterday that Coffee House Press has released the anthology "Working Words: Punching the Clock and Kicking Out the Jams," edited by Detroit's M.L. Liebler. It includes one of my stories set in Cheyenne. M.L. has been to Wyoming several times. I still remember fondly (and with some disbelief) the 2002 poetry and music performance by M.L. and Country Joe MacDonald at the old Zen's Coffee House on Lincolnway. M.L. may travel this way again soon -- stay tuned). Check out the book at http://www.coffeehousepress.org/working-words.asp.

The Detroit Metro Times had this to say about the book

“Unabashedly political. Tea-partiers beware. Working Words delivers more than 500 pages of unadulterated and unabridged working-class word art. . . . A heavy anthology . . . which suits the mission of Working Words just fine.”
The story, "The Problem with Mrs. P," was in my first collection, "The Weight of a Body," from Ghost Road Press.

McCarthy & Moore on Oprah

This should be good....

Famously reclusive author Cormac McCarthy and famously non-reclusive author and filmmaker Michael Moore will both be on Oprah tomorrow (Tuesday, June 5). McCarthy's book, "The Road," is the latest selection of Oprah's Book Club. This will be his first (and probably last) TV interview.

Moore will be on the show to promote his latest documentary film, "Sicko," which addresses the many problems of the U.S. health care system. On his web site, Moore says that he will screen "Sicko" for a national audience for the first time. This undoubtedly will be one of Moore's many TV appearances.

U.S. health care is "sicko"

As the Laramie County Democratic Party Grassroots Coalition discusses health care on May 24 (see posting below), we should keep in mind Michael Moore's new movie, "Sicko." It debuted last night at the Cannes Film Festival. This week's Time magazine has a positive review by Richard Corliss. He includes some caveats that have more to do with Moore's personality than with the film. But the filmmaker from Flint, Michigan, brings his larger-than-life persona to a topic that needs attention. Says Corliss: "As both harangue and movie tragicomedy, Sicko is socko." The movie opens June 29 in the U.S. That means that theaters in Cheyenne, Wyoming, will get it some time in August -- if at all. We may have to lobby the theater chains to get a screening. That's what happened with "Brokeback Mountain."
