This just in: Florida puts Obama over the top

I can breathe easier now. From the Association Press:

President Barack Obama was declared the winner of Florida's 29 electoral votes Saturday, ending a four-day count with a razor-thin margin that narrowly avoided an automatic recount that would have brought back memories of 2000.

No matter the outcome, Obama had already clinched re-election and now has 332 electoral votes to Romney's 206.

The Florida Secretary of State's Office said that with almost 100 percent of the vote counted, Obama led Republican challenger Mitt Romney 50 percent to 49.1 percent, a difference of about 74,000 votes. That was over the half-percent margin where a computer recount would have been automatically ordered unless Romney had waived it.

"Florida has spoken loudly in support of moving our nation forward," Ashley Walker, the Obama campaign's director for Florida, said in a news release.

Governor Romney, I’m glad that you recognize that Al Qaida is a threat, because a few months ago when you were asked what’s the biggest geopolitical threat facing America, you said Russia, not Al Qaida; you said Russia, in the 1980s, they’re now calling to ask for their foreign policy back because, you know, the Cold War’s been over for 20 years.

But Governor, when it comes to our foreign policy, you seem to want to import the foreign policies of the 1980s, just like the social policies of the 1950s and the economic policies of the 1920s.

You say that you’re not interested in duplicating what happened in Iraq. But just a few weeks ago, you said you think we should have more troops in Iraq right now. And the -- the challenge we have -- I know you haven’t been in a position to actually execute foreign policy -- but every time you’ve offered an opinion, you’ve been wrong.

ROMNEY: Thank you. And important topic, and one which I learned a great deal about, particularly as I was serving as governor of my state, because I had the chance to pull together a cabinet and all the applicants seemed to be men.

And I — and I went to my staff, and I said, "How come all the people for these jobs are — are all men." They said, "Well, these are the people that have the qualifications." And I said, "Well, gosh, can't we — can't we find some — some women that are also qualified?"

ROMNEY: And — and so we — we took a concerted effort to go out and find women who had backgrounds that could be qualified to become members of our cabinet.

I went to a number of women's groups and said, "Can you help us find folks," and they brought us whole binders full of women.

Post-mortem, Wyoming style, on the first presidential debate

Democrats gathered tonight at Lori Brand's house in Cheyenne for a debate watching party. As always, we had a lot of fun just being together as Liberals in our decidedly un-Liberal state. We ate well, and drank fine wine and beer, as we watched the give-and-take between the candidates. Mitt looked and sounded desperate, trying to be a middle-of-the-roader in the Republican Party that is being driven over a cliff by right-wing crackpots. The moderator, Jim Lehrer, had no real part in the event. As Rachel Maddow quipped when it was concluded: "We've seen the death of this debate format." Or something like that. There was a bit of debate, but both Romney and Obama ran over the moderator. It doesn't work, and we deserve better.

Still, fun was had by all. We met some new people who heard about the event through the Obama for American site. We raised some money for state and local candidates, as well as for the Obama outreach effort from Wyoming to battleground Colorado, site of the debate. Obama needs to win Colorado to win the election. So we have to keep lobbing phone calls from The Equality State to The Centennial State until Nov. 6.

Debate watch party on the agenda for Oct. 3

Democrats are holding a debate watch party on Wednesday, Oct. 3, 6:30-8:30 p.m. I saw the details on the Obama for America web site. It has a special relevance for those of us in Cheyenne who witnessed Obama's nomination and acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention in Denver in 2008. This debate comes to us from the University of Denver campus.

It wasn't mentioned, but I wonder if there is a drinking game involved? You have to chug a beer when Mitt mentions socialism? When President Obama mentions Osama bin Laden? When Mitt can't remember the time that he told the Detroit auto industry to go to hell? When President Obama mentions that he's The Savior of Detroit? When the moderators lob a softball question at either candidate?

In Randy Newman's new satiric song, the narrator dreams about a white man for president

Nonesuch Records is offering a free download of Randy Newman's new song, "I'm Dreaming." I've always been a fan of Newman's songs is which an unidentified narrator is singing about a controversial topic. In "Sail Away," the narrator (a slave trader?) is urging black Africans to go to America:

In "Short People," short people are singled out for ridicule by someone who may or may not be serious. In "Political Science," the right-wing Bircher narrator urges us to "drop the big one now" and "Boom goes London, boom Paree." In "Louisiana 1927," the rich and powerful are shown as oblivious to the plight of victims of natural disasters. This song received lots of airplay after Hurricane Katrina:

That that's an entitlement. And the government should give it to them. And they will vote for this president no matter what…These are people who pay no income tax.

RNC in Tampa due for a direct hit from Hurricane Meg

The Tampa Bay area may have received only a glancing blow from Hurricane Isaac, but it's about to be hit with the full impact of Hurricane Meg. On Monday, Meg Lanker-Simons of Cognitive Dissonance interviewed Libertarian candidate for prez and former New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson. Magical thinking makes the GOP go 'round and 'round and 'round... like a hurricane

While I was reading commentary about Rep. Todd Akin's overshare regarding abortion, the female body and the dark night of the GOP's soul, it occurred to me that the same attitude that allowed him to say what he said (call it ignorance, anti-intellectualism, magical thinking) has been at work in the GOP fight against Dodd-Frank, gay marriage, food and product safety, government spending and all the other GOP panic button social issues that have been causing a bottleneck in Congress since Obama took office.

Akin is today's GOP. The grease that moves things is magical thinking, whether we're talking about "self-regulating" businesses that can make or break the world economy or federal roads that build themselves or schools that somehow have everything they need to prepare kids for life without much in the way of tax revenue. What Akin thinks matters, because his thinking reveals a lot about the cultural conservative movement in the United States. It's the dunderheaded certainty of a religious person who believes God is not only concerned with individuals in a granular way, but that He will quite literally provide. This is a version of God that assures his followers there is no cause for alarm with regard to climate change (after all God knows what He's doing). This is a God that says, "Truly I say unto thee, shopping is beautiful in the eyes of the Lord. Nothing to see here. Get back to work."
