Readers are beginning to have questions and comments about the novel...

I should have done this a long time ago but today I created an author page on Book Bub under Michael T Shay. The road to writing and editing a book ends with a book that needs readers, surprisingly enough. I thought my blog and in-person marketing would be sufficient. But it's not. While I get the new site up and running, please feel free to ask any questions or make any comments about "Zeppelins Over Denver" here. I can answer your questions on this public forum or via e-mail or by letter. Please ask me to respond via letter! I am a lifelong writer of letters and receive so few these days. Many circulars about metal roofs and new-car sales and restaurant openings. But few letters. Thrill me!

Chapter 2 - Your research is very detailed about medical conditions in Chicago in 1919. A little gruesome about the lack of anesthesia. Did that lung specialist exist that pioneered the surgical technique?

The roots of this story lie in my grandfather's stories of his lung removal in Chicago. He had hideous scars which I saw but one time while he was changing his shirt. His story included the crazy fact that the only anesthesia he was give was a couple swigs of cheap whiskey. I always thought "Those bastards in Chicago didn't want to waste expensive anesthetics on some poor mick from Roscommon." The truth was they couldn't give him anesthesia for lung surgery because ether can cause lung problems. So, strong liquor was the answer. There was a surgeon who perfected a new surgical technique around this time when so many soldiers had suffered from gas attacks and the Spanish flu was spreading rapidly. I'll have to look at my notes for names.
