I had to laugh at the Wyoming Tribune-Eagle headline this morning: "GOP candidates share vision for future." Sure, I said to myself as I wolfed down pancakes, those Republicans always have a vision for the future. Usually they're talking like it's 1999 -- or maybe 1899.
Visionaries Sam Brownback, Duncan Hunter, and Fred Thompson spoke at a statewide GOP forum Saturday, first in Casper, and then down the road in Riverton. Also on the dais was Josh Romney, one of Gov. Mitt Romney's dedicated sons. Josh and his brothers are so dedicated to getting their dad elected that none have taken time out to fight terrorism in Iraq. Josh noted that, if elected, his dad has sworn to add 100,000 troops to the fight in Iraq. He didn't mention that none of those troops will have the last name of Romney, but that almost goes without saying.
Some of the trailblazing ideas floated by the presidential hopefuls included continuing Bush's surge in Mesopotamia, erection of a huge wall along the Mexican border, more tax cuts for the rich, rebuilding traditional families, criminalizing abortion, and privatizing Social Security. There was some talk of "energy security" by Duncan Hunter, who wants to U.S. to be "energy secure" in 15 years: "Every dollar we send overseas probably goes to someone who is not our friend."
Hunter has a good point. So many American dollars have gone to Saudi oil sheiks that they almost don't need our money any more. Almost.
Give credit to the Wyoming GOP: at least some of their party's candidates come to Wyoming. Gov. Bill Richardson briefly touched down in Jackson during the summer to raise funds. But that's about it. If Howard Dean wants to continue the Dems' 50-state strategy, he might try convincing Hilary Clinton and Barack Obama and even Dennis Kucinich (my man!) to fly into Casper or Cheyenne for a little politicking among the faithful.
