They continue to ignore my pleas. They’re all Republicans, so I expect nothing less. Except for a few courageous Repubs like Chuck Hagel from our neighbor Nebraska, they all march in lockstep with the Prez. A dangerous course, but it’s fodder to use for the next round of elections. We almost got rid of Rep. Barbara Cubin last time. We work toward better results in 2008.
Cubin’s correspondence is pretty lame. The usual trite "Democrats hate our troops" nonsense.
It’s different with Sen. Enzi and Sen. Thomas. Their letters are usually more thoughtful and less shrill. Still shot through with denial and half-truths about the Dems’ stand on Iraq. Not lies, exactly, but insinuations and strained justifications for an issue that can’t be justified. Here’s an example from Enzi’s May 3 reply to my earlier letter of support for the supplemental appropriations bill with troop withdrawal deadlines:
President Bush vetoed H.R. 1591 [supplemental war spending bill] on May 1, 2007. The House of Representatives was unable to override the veto with a vote of 222-203, falling well short of the needed two-thirds majority. If the Senate would have voted on the measure, I would have voted to sustain the President's veto. It is time for the opponents of the President to stop playing politics with our troops.
In addition to the supplemental appropriations bill, I have voted against all five of the non-binding procedural motions on Iraq. You cannot have war run by committee. These motions take away the Constitutional power of the Commander-in-Chief and the military structure charged with and designed for the responsibility. I will not attempt to change the United States Constitution with non-binding resolutions.
It's time for the opponents of the President to stop playing politics with our troops. I love this line. The President and his Republican lackeys have been playing politics with our troops since the war started. They are pawns in some sort of neocon game that says America can bring democracy to the world because we say so. The troops were sent to carry out a fool's errand. Now the big fool says to push on, even though we're waist-deep in The Big Muddy Euphrates.
Almost as nonsensical is this: You can't have a war run by committee. Actually that's exactly what Bush has been doing. His committee consists of a few fellow true believers. God forbid a voice of disagreement should intrude. Bush's war-making cabal has been so wildly successful. Why change course now?
