Remembering 1972 and the president that might have been,

I'm thinking of the late George McGovern tonight. Small-town South Dakota boy who piloted his B-24 on 35 bombing mission in World War II. He was a student of history and later taught history as a college professor. History was the subject of most of his books. He wrote about Abraham Lincoln and the Colorado Coalfield War of 1913-1914. He was the Democratic Party's candidate for the 1972 presidential elections. He lost to Nixon in one of the biggest landslides. He might have become bitter and reclusive but instead became a peacenik and was a lifelong advocate for ending hunger. A good man, deserving of the presidency.
