NEWS FLASH: CBS White House correspondent Bill Plante said this morning that President Bush will no longer be using to term "stay the course" when it comes to Iraq. What a relief. Americans have been urging the president to make some changes in Iraq policy. By jettisoning this phrase, the administration shows its commitment to using the correct wording to describe the Iraq War. But what will be the replacement phrase? My suggestion: "Light at the end of the tunnel." It worked so well in Vietnam. And it's appropriate, now that we have Vietnam policy hawks Henry Kissinger and James Baker advising the Bushies on Iraq. It's also a lot more accurate, since the Iraq War has been one long dark tunnel, with hundreds of thousands of Iraqi dead, 2,800 dead American G.I.s, and the U.S.A.'s reputation in tatters worldwide.
